“Curvy Electric Fan” Mini Quilt

I am so excited to talk about my Curvy Electric Fan.  This mini quilt is made from an altered block called Electric Fan in Electric Quilt 8*.  It was elongated and a few more curves were added for my Island Batik Ambassador Project for December.  The fabrics, batting and thread were given to me by Island Batik.

To tell you the truth, I struggled with the Island Batik Ambassador theme this month. I knew it was coming and just couldn’t get into anything – I think my brain wanted Christmas but not wonky…  So,  I made some slabs – I like them but would like to have had more colors & variety.  Sadly, they were put away for another time – not enough to do what I wanted with them.  Other ambassadors had done trees and stars and wonky Christmas, so I wanted something different.

I was doing some playing in Electric Quilt 8.  Something caused me to look at the electric fan block and then the Curated Quilts call came out – for a mini quilt in these colors with curves – an idea was born!  I found some Island Batik fabrics that matched the call and off I went.

Once I figured out how to make the pieces almost all the same size (a little wonky), I printed  templates on freezer paper.  I then ironed them to my fabric and cut out the pieces.  I did the simple curved piecing  – pinning and it worked like a charm.  I think the accuracy of the templates (even if a little off) helped it work out so fast.  The fabrics: light green and dark green are from the Sweet Tweet collection (used in this My Victorian Window).  The pink is bubblegum and the blue is maybe ocean from the blenders line.

Next, was planning my quilting.  I did this with my finger on my phone, not too precise but it helped get me going.   Its not precise but gave me a good idea of what I wanted to do. I then put a piece of Hobbs thermore batting, under the pink pieces, sewed around each, and then trimmed the excess. I then made the regular sandwich with the thermore batting and  use  foulard apple green for the backing.

I used some of my favorite Aurifil thread to quilt the project.  the #1147 green and #1148 turquoise are two of my new favorites.  It cracks me up that they are numbered consecutively – kismet or karma? – I’ll take it.

The quilting was fairly similar to the plan, with the exception of the light green curved pieces.  Someone mentioned they loved the dragonflies and I thought they would look good quilted.  I love the puffiness of the “trapunto-ed” pink and the way the rest of the matchstick quilting worked out.

For the back, I chose another Island Batik in a springy green color.

My plan is to enter tomorrow in the Curated Quilts call for minis.  It is my first time trying, but I thought the colors were perfect and it was fun to have a project that fit the bill for two things!  This was also my goal for Elm Street Quilts One Monthly Goal and Q4FAL2018

Last weeks giveaway was awarded by random number generator and Beth T won the giveaway. Over a yard of Island Batiks are heading her way!
