Recovering Quilting Addict
Honestly, this quilting addict is well on her way to recovery. The ankle is better and I am back to sewing most days. There is still physical therapy, but life is looking very different. I finished a quilt – hooray! I made some blocks; there are still more to be made. Part of my recovery has taught me that rather than doing multiple things each day, getting one sewing task done is sufficient. Actually, one is just perfect!

Tutorial: Simple Placement for 12″ blocks
I came up with a simple formula for some leftover 12 1/2″ blocks (finished at 12″) in a placemat. I have a few that I will be doing this and donating to a Meals on Wheels program.
A Simple Placemat Tutorial for a Leftover 12” Block.

- First frame the block with 2 strips cut at 1 ½” x 12 ½” and 2 strips cut at 1½” x 14 ½”
- Then use an accent strip on the left cut at 1” x 14 ½”
- Then add one more strip on the left – cut at 3.5” x 14 ½”
- This placemat finishes at 14” x 17 ½”.

- First frame the block with 2 strips cut at 1 ½” x 12 ½” and 2 strips cut at 1½” x 14 ½”
- Then use 2 accent strips on the left and right cut at 1” x 14 ½”
- Then add 2 more strips on the left and right – cut at 2” x 14 ½”
- This placemat finishes at 14” x 18”.
I would probably pillowcase these rather than bind them. Hope you enjoy these quick ways to use up your leftover 12” blocks!

Hi Kathleen, I’m so glad that you’re recovering, although I don’t think that it’s from a quilting addiction lol! Those are great placemats for using up extra blocks. Thanks for the idea!
