Isn’t my quilt studio adorable? Abbie Danahy of Sparkle On is the designer for the host for Block #5. I met Abbie, and the rest of this gang, a little over 2 years ago and we are now on our 3rd QAL. Abbie was a relatively new quilter when we began and now she is designing her own blocks. I love what she came up with. There aren’t too many things to watch for in this block, so my hints are few.

Directional Prints: I choose a directional print for the background and made sure that I cut pieces so that they would run the same way. This is pretty easy. I mark up my pattern with arrows so when it says cut the 2×3 piece I know which measurement needs them horizontal.

Directional Half Square Triangles, which are done with the flip and sew method, require the piece to run in the vertical to come out horizontal. I don’t remember the rule, but instead test it every time.

Choosing the fabric is always my favorite thing to do. The background print I had been waiting to use in this project and finally this block was perfect. The house fabric was bought at a quilt show and was an over-dye of another printed fabric. It is much more vibrant in real life. The grass is an ombre green I use in a lot of situations like this The sidewalk – a grunge – so perfect if I may so.

Great block. Kathleen, I think your quilt shop has a gothic look to it. I love the fabric you have chosen for the walls of the quilt shop. I can’t believe Segment 1 is finished already!
Hadn’t thought of it as gothic, but it does, doesn’t it? That fabric was a favorite and that has been the fun thing about doing this – many of the fabrics were ones I really loved forever and then the sewing fabrics made this all so much fun! Looking forward to a supporting role this segment!
Hi Kathleen! THAT FABRIC!!! PIGS – never, ever heard that one before. I l.o.v.e. this block and how you made it your own. It couldn’t get any better. ~smile~ Roseanne
Those pigs are space hogs aren’t they.
The text fabric is perfect!! I learned from reading it. I have a lot of PIGS and WHIMMs. I also have a PhD and don’t tell Tu-Na Helper my hidden secret places. There is a reason why I can’t put my clothing where it belongs!
Dr. Tu-Na I won’t tell! Although, as Tu-Na Helper he probably suspects and maybe even helped you with your STASH.
Love the fabric choices! It turned out so well!
I am having fun using all those fabrics I have stashed for years!
I love Kathleen’s Quilt Studio! It is fun to read about your fabric choices, they are all so unique and beautiful. I can see why you love the fabric you used for the shop, it is has gorgeous colors and looks like an artist ink drew the delicate flowers on it.
Your personal comments really mean a lot to me. You and the group have inspired me to keep challenging myself to move forward with quilting. Thanks for all your support my friend 🙂
That fabric really is so much fun.. It really is great to see the growth in you as a quilter over the last few years!
