BOO! – A Finished Table Runner

I just couldn’t resist a cute ghost quilt pattern and a quilt along. I just finished in time to have it out for halloween, but you are lucky, there are still a few days to make a ghost and join in Michelle’s Cain’s Quilt Along at her blog From Bolt to Beauty.

The Pattern and Book

Over the past few years, I have gotten to know Michelle, who blogs at From Bolt to Beauty. Five Little Ghosts is from Michelle’s book Not Your Typical Jelly Roll Quilts. You can order it directly from Michelle here or from the Fat Quarter Shop* or Amazon* (*my affiliate links). In fact, you could download a copy from her site and make one little ghost up and still enter here for the QAL by November 4th!

I have to say there are a few patterns that call my name in this book. One that you may see me make one day is this one, called Pod Patrol. I really love the idea of the scrappy water and the lovely whales enjoying the blue sea. However, before I get carried away, we should get back to the ghosts.

Making the Table Runner

I have learned my lesson from many an Elizabeth Hartman quilt, so I labeled everything. I

I used the alphabitties* to label the pieces that had letters and my handwritten pieces for the others. I just notice they have an expansion pack for the double letters which would be awesome for some other patterns with more pieces. I delighted that there were very few pieces.

Michelle used a white on white fabric, for the ghosts but I had this gray spooky fabric that I really thought was just perfect. The background was a one of the Northcott Stonehenge fabrics, also a bit mottled, and I like the way they worked together. In fact, not having the right background is what delayed the project a little – I didn’t have the right background so a quick trip to a local sewing store, Sewing Machine Exchange in Portland provided the perfect piece!

Quilting the Runner

I used a pattern that I had made before and made the width between them a little narrower. It fussed at me a little, but in the end it was perfect. It is very similar to what Michelle did on her runner. I thought about trying some glow in the dark thread (which I have) but I can still add that. I used a Hobbs 80/20 batting, and quilted with Silver Superior So Fine and a Magna-Glide light grey on the bottom.

For now, Boo! is finished and I am so pleased. That one ghost on the right end looks a little wiggly but really isn’t. It does give that last one a little bit of character. All in all this was a fun make and I am glad I snuck it in!

    1. Her ghosties are just adorable aren’t they? I love your runner—good call on the grey ghostly fabric. I also like the narrower sashing. Now I’m thinking it would be fun to put background triangles around the ghosts so they are ‘dancing’! Ha—the video is so good!

  2. Absolutely adorable Boo. Love them all 🙂 May be I can make this block for next year’s RSC. Celebrating Diversity – Halloween Edition 😀 Thank you for the smiles.
