An invitation to join a blog hop is always a welcome one. If you know Joan Kawano, of Moose Stash Quilting, you know that she loves all things Halloween. I enjoy halloween, but I generally don’t do a lot of decorating, so my stash of Halloween quilts is few. However, it was time to unearth some fabrics and release them from the dark closet of the sewing stash and make a quilt. Here’s what I did!
Making the Quilt
I had a few fabrics stashed. Some of the fabrics came from a box of Halloween goodies I ordered years ago at the Fat Quarter Shop (maybe covid?). Other fabrics were from my days working at the quilt shop and among them is a favorite Day of the Dead fabric. I was determined to use most of them and clear out the stash. To be honest, most were smaller pieces including some fat quarters. The orange pumpkins were 1/2 yard, the orange/black moons were 1 yard and the Day of the Dead is one of those fabrics that keeps on giving, more than a yard!
I played around in Electric Quilt and finally came up with a design I liked. It checked all the boxes: use the fabric, see the fabric, and be a quick fun quilt. I was able to use 90% of the fabric that I had, and made the top, backing and binding in 2 afternoons.
Here you can see all the pieces together. I used 6″ blocks, which finished at 5.5″ inches and cut a 1.5″ border of the dots, and 3.5″ border of the Amish black. The moon fabric, in orange and black, was just a little duller than the others, but I had a lot of it. I was able to use it for a pieced back. I also had a lot of the pumpkins; binding it became!
Quilting the Quilt
I decided to quilt it with a Prosticher design, called Pumpkin Patch. I edited the design and added a bat in because I wanted more halloween symbols in it. The photo above is what it looked liked with the lines made a little thicker so it is easier to see.
I auditioned it on the quilt and liked it. It was quilted with Glide Marigold for the front and Glide Light Grey on the backing. I believe in using two colors and often do on my quilts.
I believe it only took 5 passes of the pantograph, just a quick little one to quilt.
Before I knew it, it was ready to bind.
Here it is all trimmed and ready to be bound.
I had made my binding when I made the backing so it was quick to put on the quilt. I love this little binding tool I purchased from Alycia’s son (Alycia Quilts-Quilty Girl); I don’t know if he still makes them.
Before I knew it was done and here are the views of the front and back. The back looks like a much more vibrant orange than it really is, which is why it didn’t make it on the front!
Of course, I had to put it to use, so here is is keeping a neighbor’s skeleton warm. I was so pleased to happen upon the perfect display.

I’m not much of one for Halloween decorating or celebrating either, though I love another excuse to buy chocolate lol. Doesn’t it feel fantastic to use up fabric that’s been languishing? I’ve been doing a lot of that lately. I absolutely love the photo of the quilt keeping the skeleton warm!
There is nothing more fun than a quick quilt and using up fabrics in your stash. Those fabrics were perfect for this Hop, and I think Mr. Skeleton looks quite grand sporting that quilt!
