Robin’s Quilt

It is hard to pass up a request to make a quilt for someone, isn’t it? When asked about a quilt for Robin, I said it would be a few months and it took all of that time. It was for a baby whose nursery is a forest theme. Let me show you what I came up with!

Fabric Choices

I wanted a feature fabric for the quilt and I found this one, by Clothworks, called Imagine by Rebecca Jones. I loved the animals, rather whimsical and realistic. The colors were fun, and I chose the rust, green and teal as accent colors.

Pattern Design

I designed the quilt in Electric Quilt 8. There were a few other choices, but the woman commissioning the quilt chose this one. The star points are paper pieced; I did it this way for accuracy.

One of the things I do is always check the piece I am adding to make sure that it is covering the paper. I generally cut about 1/2″ around the finished size of the piece. I skimped a little on the first set of triangles, but changed the piece size after I made a few.

Before you know it the quilt was together, and ready to quilt. The days were dark and rainy here, so the light is not as good a I would like. I was checking out the backing I picked up while shop hopping, and I really liked the way it went with the quilt.

Quilting

I quilted it on Tabitha, my Simply 16 with Prostitcher! I love using the great designs in Prostitcher and this one is called Hieroglyphs from Urban Elements. It is swirly and a fun design and worked perfectly for this quilt.

I used a new to me quilting thread, YLI variegated Majestic #407 for the quilting and a Superior Super Bobs Poly Grey in the bobbin, it worked like a charm. What I liked was that over the body of the quilt it did a nice job blending in the and in the borders, you got to see the design a little more, but it wasn’t too much contrast!

I didn’t have enough of the green to bind the quilt, so I made a faux binding with the rust, a perfect solution. If you don’t know how, I highly recommend Lorna’s tutorial at Sew Fresh Quilts, which you can find here.

Finished Quilt

The quilt finished at 42″ x 52″. I used a Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 in the quilt and love the loft that it gives the quilt. I pre-washed it, to make sure there would be no trouble with the batik bleeding. I know I can solve it but doubt that a new mother can!

A Pattern Is Coming

This is a very traditional kind of pattern, but one that appeals to many people, and for that reason I decided to make a pattern and include the foundation pattern for the star points. It will be ready soon; I spent a day doing it when I should have been writing this blog post. I have a few finishing touches to put on it, and hope to debut it early in June.
