Want a quick make for a retreat? Last week I was on retreat for 4 days and 3 nights. I had a few other projects but I always like a fast finish, so I planned this one to take with me. After some grueling piecing, I put this together lickety-split and have a fun baby quilt to give to someone or donate!
Using the Stash
Leftovers were on the menu! I only had a little bit of the feature fabric from my last quilt. The other bits were just about as small but I found two others in my stash that worked and a little baby quilt was born! I had a lime green and a dark green that would work.
Electric Quilt* came to my aid in figuring out the size to cut things in. Having a plan and the dimensions all laid out made it a very quick one to make! Only 10 seams and I was done. I have done ones like this on the longarm, too, but it is just as easy on a domestic machine.
Quilting the Quilt
I was using a rainbow fabric for the back, a lot of color and perfect for any child. Next up was deciding on a pantograph.
I used Bubble Clams designed by Melissa Kelley. You can find the pantograph here (and other places, too). It worked out really well, and I think it gave a lot more interest to the quilt too.
Because I have Prostitcher Designer, I can easily take a look at how a pattern will look on the quilt, and get a pretty good idea if there is anything I need to change to make it work better.
Like the last quilt, I used YLI variegated Majestic #407 for the quilting and a Superior Super Bobs Poly Grey in the bobbin, it worked like a charm. For binding, I went with the lime green as I had plenty of it. It adds a nice spark to the quilt! I also used Hobbs Thermore as it is one of the battings I like to use when I don’t really know where the quilt is going. It will handle anything!
Finished Quilt
Here it is in all its glory. The front looks great with the lime green binding. Oh, and I finished it yesterday right before bed, so I am calling it a May finish. Feels good to me that way. And I usually publish at midnight but forgot to change it on the posting, so most of you won’t see it until Monday morning….ugh.
A little flip of the back onto the front, shows how it works with the front. I often like to make sure things don’t clash, and the cheery colors make for a fun quilt. I always like to think of what kids might do with a quilt, learning the names of the animals on the front and the rainbow colors on the back. It is also a perfect tummy time quilt – not too fussy but will do the trick!

This is a great quilt! It’s a good reminder of how not much of a feature fabric can be stretched with the strips to make a wonderful useable piece! I like the back and the shot of it folded to the front which I often do for the same reasons as you. My favourite is the lime green binding though the quilting motif is pretty cool too!
