Jolly Bar Jig – A Finished Quilt

Almost as fast as you can do a jig, you can make the Jolly Bar Jig* quilt from the Fat Quarter Shop*. I love their projects, and this one is a a superfast quilt to make and the design works well with either Jolly Bars or Layer Cakes. Without futher ado, lets take a look at this quilt!

The Jolly Bar Jig Pattern

You can see why the Jolly Bar Jig* quilt is quick to make. I made the smal lap quilt
38 1/2” x 46 1/2”, as it fits well on my frame. There is a also included a large lap quilt size
55 1/2” x 68 1/2”.

Fabric and Preparation

This is the all the fabric that came from the Fat Quarter Shop for my Jolly Bar Quilt. Now, they didn’t have the jolly bar in stock yet, so I was fortunate to get a layer cake, which gives you enough fabric to make a second quilt! Also, the floral on the end was a bonus and I love it. I may use it on the back of the second version.

The fabric collection is Sacré Bleu from Moda. It is gorgeous.

Before I begin with any precut, I take my trusty lint roller to the pack. Honestly, I want to pick off the fuzzies on my screen, they do get everywhere. Someday, I may get a small vacuum for my studio.

I then sorted them into colors, and added the binding and the background so you could see it all together.

This was the only trimming needed, a little shave off the 10″ length to 9 1/2″. Since I was using a Layer Cake, I needed to cut the pieces in half, but a Jolly Bar is already 5″ so you wouldn’t need to do that.

You then pair up the fabrics and sew on either side. One more trim and you can start putting it all together. You simply cut the pieces in half.

I also prepped the border and binding strips. I love both the tools I am using here…the Famore rotary cutter* and the Stripology ruler*. I find it makes quick work of cutting strips and making subsequent subcuts. My cutting table is too small for the larger mats and rulers; its a kitchen island butcher block on rollers, perfect for the 18″ x 24″ mats.

The next job up is pressing the pairs. I am never sure what my favorite part of quilting is, but this gives me lots of satisfaction, especially when it is so easy.

Then off to the design wall. I played with a number of variations. I would take a photo and then make a duplicate and edit it become a black and white picture. It helps to see some things you might not catch.

Here it is nearly all assembled. It was very fast to put together.

Quilting The Quilt

The pantograph I quilted is by Anne Bright and called Florence. I liked the way it mimicked the patterns in the fabric.

For quilting, I used Glide Warm Grey on the top and bottom. It was a perfect shade and looks fabulous on the quilt. I have to say this quilted up in no time. The batting was Hobbs Heirloom 80/20*.

The picture session ensued. We went outdoors to the backyard, a little windy.

I was able to get a fun shot down at the lobster shack, where the wind was blocked!

The last few shots are in in my bedroom. I highly recommend this as a fast quilt to make with no matching seams – a quilter’s dream.
