It’s a Garden Party Show and Tell Day

We have made it through the great Garden Party Row Along and now designers are sharing their final quilting projects. So, one of the things some designers do is combine some of the other blocks into one piece. I picked a small piece of another designers block and added one more bit to mine (which will be available to download).

But before I continue, I must thank Marian of Seams to be Sew, who works so hard with everyone to make it all come together! In addition to keeping us all in line, she had to tend to her tender self after a fall – not easy to do with so many cats to herd but she did it.

Here is my block before any changes.  I used this as the basis for my final version.  Yes, I was so luck to have the great Northcott fabrics that were donated for this hop.  The colors were fabulous and you can find out the specifics in my original post, as well as the pattern.

The second quilt, I added some parts from Quilter Chic block, Caribbean Garden. I loved her coneflowers and birds and the proportions worked well with my block. However, upon further examination, I only used the small coneflower and one bird.

Now you are seeing something else that crept onto my block too! When I was done adding the pieces I chose, I felt like the grass looked a little lonely. I thought about adding a squirrel, calling me to my sewing room with another project in my head. This squirrel is not real, we have none on the island, so we know it just a vision of projects longing for attention. If you see it, you must be like me and always have something waiting for you to return to your studio. FYI, I added a 9″ wide version of my block, with the appliqué to get a piece that finished 21″ x 18″.

Electric Quilt 8 was one of the sponsors for the blog with a great discount for us. I used the squirrel that comes in the software for this addition to my block. Here’s a link to a download if you don’t have EQ8.

For the quilting of the final block with the additions, I used my Handiquilter Sweet Sixteen with Prosticher. Now, this was custom quilted by me. I did straight lines within the fence, 3 blades of grass (also sometimes referred to as chicken feet) and some free motion aground the basket and watermelon as well as more lines that followed the plaid. It was the first time I used my micro quilting foot* for the stippling in the star background, and I was very happy with it!

I quilted the other practice piece with a design called Modernish (from Urban Elements). I like that you can see the difference quilting makes for a piece. This one is not bound yet, but it will be tomorrow. This is my OMG and I am already done ( I do have a TGIFF to do so I will be busy). I think in the end, I prefer my custom quilting on this one. It’s really fun to see the difference it can make.

I have not participated in one of Marian’s hops and it is quite the challenge. If she’ll have me in again, I know I should start making blocks as they show up…there’s plenty of time and it would be fun to try. The variety of sizes threw me for a loop, but I think I get it and could make it work on the next go around.
