Tips and Tutorials on the 22nd – #39 – Moving Your WordPress Site

Welcome to this month’s edition of Tips and Tutorials on the 22nd where you can learn lots of new things. I have a summary of last month’s link ups and a linky party to celebrate this month’s link ups. I’ll share with you some of my thoughts about things to do if you move your hosting site, like I did earlier this month.

For those of you who get my emails, MailerLite is my new service, but it sent out two blank ones when there was no new content – my apologies. Also, I am not seeing all the images on mine, so I am going to a plain format until I figure out why.

Here’s a list from last month’s link ups! I am so grateful to those who share their tips and tutorials each month.

Tip: Moving Your WordPress Site

Here are a few things you may want to keep in mind if you need to do this. I moved from on hosting site to Bluehost due to cost of running the site with the prior vendor. I was able to lock in a price for 3 years tht was equivalent to one year on my old provider. I think this is a “game” like cable and internet services…cheaper the first year/s and then it keeps going up. I expect I will need to do it again in a few years.

  1. Backup your old site and download it locally.
    • This takes time and you may need an FTP software to do it (as it is a large file).
    • I used FTP Rush and it worked well.
  2. Make sure you get more space (critical with all the photos we use). This is part of the cost of doing business. I don’t want to remove things from my site.
  3. Make sure you have the expert help you need.
    • I could move it and probably be successful. For this vendor, there was a free option, I wasn’t eligible for (my site was too large). The cost was well worth me not having to worry about it.
    • I also moved my mail and had them do it (and paid for it). I do use a branded email for my website and wanted to continue doing that.
  4. Schedule it in your time frame
    • You want to have time left in your old contract to make sure things are working and return to the old host, if you need to.
    • You won’t want to need to post for a week or so, so make sure you can have that flexibility in your schedule.
  5. Warn your users so they know there are changes.
  6. Be patient….it takes a while to get it all working.
    • Get ready for a some calls with tech support to work through a few things.
    • There may be some funny messages from Google while this is going on, give it a little time to catch up.

That is all I have for now, but if more comes up, I will share it with you.

Join the Linky Party

Now it’s your turn to post, and the rules are simple – write up a tip or group of tips or a tutorial that is quilting or sewing-related and link that post below. The linky party is open from 12:01 am on the 22nd, through midnight on April 30th. The post does not have to be new but should be one that hasn’t been linked to Tips and Tutorials in the past. If you don’t have a blog, please send it to me (kathleen@kathleenmcmusing.com) and I will post your tip or tutorial for you!

You are invited to the Inlinkz link party!

Coming Up on My Blog

My Fab Fab Farm Sew Along began on Monday….it is still early, we haven’t made the first block. You can get more information in my post for the SAL, beginning on 4/17! I am sitting in a hotel room, as I finish this, at a local quilt show and will be taking a class. The last class I did like this was 2020…nice to be back at it again. I’ll confess to my fabric purchases on Monday’s post. The good news is one quilt needs binding next week, so I will be down a bit before long.
