The call went out from Carol, who blogs at “Just Let Me Quilt”, to join in the blog hop. Carol has done this for quite a few years and it is always a lot of fun. I accepted the challenge, as I knew I had some great Christmas fabrics to use up.
Planning the Runner
Here are the fabrics I wanted to use. I only had 4 fat quarters from this line and thought I had another red that would work with the group. I put the collection into Electric Quilt and started playing. A simple star, and an off-centered frame would be perfect.
Here is what I came up with. I liked having the star off-centered and also wanted to use a little of the grey. I am not so certain about the red border, but that can wait until the end.
Making the Quilt
Off to the sewing room to see if the vision would work out as I planned.
I used Yvonne’s guide for Flying Geese and was not disappointed. You can find that here.
I marked the squares, something I don’t always do but was glad to give the directions the full attention!
Then, the piecing began with adding two squares on the larger square, cutting the apart and adding the final square. It really is a perfect way to make a lot of flying geese!
I then added the flying geese to the center squares and the side squares.
After I added the grey borders were added to two sides, I carefully decidedwhich direction to face the center squares. I wanted the runner to have some right side pieces no matter where you where, end of the runner or in the middle. After that, I auditioned my reds and I did not like any of them. They did nothing for the runner.
So, I decided to add back the tree print that was used in the star points, for the outer border. I was keeping this runner to a certain size….11″ x 38″ would be the finished dimensions so it would fit where I wanted to use it.
The backing was another Christmas fabric that I had and I think I might like turning this over for February and looking at the cardinals! As you can probably tell, I pillow-cased the runner so no binding was needed. I simply quilted along some of the lines, and actually may do a little more with some metallic thread in the coming weeks. Right now, it is quilted enough for the season and can be used.
This gives you a better idea of why I wanted it to be that size. And yes, you can see, it is snowing as I write this. Also, this is our kitchen, and the dividing line of the old house and new addition is right where the runner is. The house used to end there, but we added a kitchen and turned the old one into a full bath.

I wrote up the pattern for you! If you use it, I did write it for the original plan, so there is a border fabric and a binding included.
Treat #2 – My Virtual Cookie
I wanted to make these but didn’t, but do enjoy the recipe. They have two of my favorite things – coconut and cranberries so I thought they would be perfect. We are traveling on the post day and I didn’t want them to go to waste, so I will make another day!

Good morning Kathleen. As I am writing this we are at ,I beleive, the tail end of our first winter storm this year. Overnight ,a bit more that a foot of snow has arrived blanketing my surroundings. It’s still snowing, and the wind has started to develop, so maybe we aree not finished yet. The finches, chickadees, and sparrows have been breakfasting with us this morning at the backdoor feeder. I’m so happy to have their company.
