Welcome to Block 9 the Awesome Ocean Sew Along (#AOSAL) and Sally the Seahorse. I love this block, maybe because I find seahorses such interesting creatures. This is the last block of the QAL and I can’t believe how quickly this QAL went along. We have only two more scheduled events….the presentation of the tops and the finished quilts. Before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s finish the last block.

Hint 1: Fabric Considerations for this block:
I kept the fins the same fabric on mine as I liked the way that fabric went with both color ways.
Hint 2: Time to Prep/Make Block:
Prep time is about 1/2 – 3/4 hour of cutting and an 1 1/2 to 2 hours of sewing. 24 piece sizes with multiple pieces make for a little longer block. I did the body and then took a rest until I felt like doing the tail.

Hint 3: Pay attention!
When making the fins there is one set that has pieces that are 2 different sizes – R & Q!

I loved seeing this one come together. I did try to pay attention when cutting out the pieces to the directional fabric, but I did find one spot where I missed paying attention – the neck. I am fine with it. It also happened in the curve of the tail, but again a design decision I am fine with.

We just need to assemble the quilt next time. In case you did not take the bait in the beginning of the QAL, and, the seahorse is calling you to catch this wave – here is what you need to play along:
1. Get the Elizabeth Hartman’s Awesome Ocean pattern from my amazon affiliate link* or from the designer directly or in your local store.
2. The links are updated below for any completed blocks.
3. I love using the ruler, Simple Folded Corners Ruler* for all those diagonal cuts. I don’t draw lines, I just cut the corner then sew!

Here’s the updated calendar for blocks and guest bloggers! Make your seahorses and be ready to start thinking about assembling your quilt. My top is done and ready for the next blog on 3/28. I can’t wait to show you my flimsy.

Fun seahorses! I can’t believe you’re already on the last block! I’m looking forward to your flimsy and finished quilt, Kathleen!
These guys are so cute…if seahorses are guys at all! LOL!! Can’t wait to see your completed top!
They turned out wonderfully!!! I promise I will try to catch up.
Those are so cute! I can’t wait to see the top all together.
Thanks, I finished quilting it today. Nice to be a bit ahead on my QAL!
These seahorses make me so happy! Catch up when it is easy….
It did go fast and boy do I love this quilt. The flimsy is done and waiting for me to load it on the frame, but I have a few other things to do or I’ll get lost in the world of quilting!
I always loved seahorses and love the way these turned out. I just checked and there are both sexes in seahorses. Males carry the babies and deliver them – a nice switch!
Your choice of fabric for the seahorses is perfect with those swirls! I agree, paying attention is key, along with labeling. Great blocks!
Just so cute! And I love your fabrics of course!
These are too cute! And in boy/girl colors too!
Yes, they are in boy/girl colors. I was just working with the color ways in the Layer Cake I had…serendipity!
