Nearly a year ago, I started taking classes with Kari Schell at On Point Quilter for Electric Quilt 8*. One of the first was a class with stars and I think this star was a result of that class. You can read all about the first version here.

This version was made for our church’s renovated sacristy and was on my list for a finish for this quarter. I did cut it close to the wire, a little more than 5 hours until the end of the day! It is done, all hand sewing – everything! I pieced it with Aurifil 50 wt #2024 and used Carol Doak’s foundation paper for the paper piecing. I also used my favorite Island Batik‘s as I did in the last.

I loaded it onto SS Tabitha (my Handiquilter Sweet Sixteen). I didn’t baste as I thought I could get it tight enough and I did. On another quilt I might baste (as is recommended) but this behaved really well.

I did the stippling on the frame. The white thread for this was a sample from Superior Thread and it behaved really well. The batting was also Hobb’s Heirloom Cotton; it performed beautifully.
Needle is broken Tip was on the bottom
Then, I knew I could do ruler work but the lines were long and I knew a quick move to my Janome 3160 QC was in order. Well I did this. Not once, but twice! I though oh, no, this will never happen. I used an Aurifil 40/2 thread in Salmon which was not so bright and perfect for this part of the quilting. The little bit thicker thread was a nice emphasis for the straight line quilting.

The quilting gods smiled, and the rest finished with ease. I did the facing again, and I love it!

This was part of my second quarter goals and I am so pleased to have it done. One more quilt almost made it but, I ran out of thread! I was quilting on the new frame, and thought the bobbin was going to run out, but NOOOO the top did – a sample thread. All in all it was a good quarter…just look at this quilt!

Addendum: 7/3/19 Here is the quilt, hanging in the renovated sacristy at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Charlestown MA.

Beautiful! I don’t do many faced bindings, but may have to consider doing more of them.
Its not so bad! I rather like it – especially for a wall hanging only quilt.
That star shines brightly, nice work!
Thank you, Vicki!
Very nice quilt for the sacristy, Kathleen! They recommend you baste your quilt for your longarm?
Thanks, Nancy! The basting is for the original frame, the little foot, which works like a hoop frame. I was using the leaders on another quilt that I ran out of thread, so I didn’t want to redo it, and thought this would work. I think you would want a little spray baste if it is a larger quilt….which you would need to move a lot more than this little guy.
What a colorful and pretty little quilt. It reminds me of Autumn.
I love the colors in this version, too! I wanted to keep most of the original feel, love the outside dot fabric in this version.
Such gorgeous work! Those colors…perfect. Thanks for linking up to What I Made Monday.
Wonderful finish Kathleen, so vibrant! Funny you going back and forth…Once I pin a quilt on my Avanté leaders it ain’t movin’ until it’s done!
Wow, this is such a beautiful design! Love it!
Thank you! Its one of the ones that I first did that I really love and have made more than once!
I’m not sure how I missed commenting on this post — sorry! Love the star quilts, Kathleen. I just started the EQ8 classes, and I’m already behind. Haha. Won’t take me long to catch up though, hopefully today. I used to use Carol Doak’s paper, now I just order a ream of newsprint from an art store for about $4.
It is so easy to do. I sometimes feel like I spend way too much time commenting..and then putting the comments on my site. I do think it is worth it and now am trying to reply immediately. I don’t know why you don’t have a reply/email/post option. If only I were a programmer. I looked at getting newsprint but our staples didn’t have it and I didn’t have time to wait for the delivery, but definitely plan to. In fact, I will be sure to order it so it is there for the next trip to Boston.
This star has a lovely warm glow. How dedicated of you to move between machines so often, but totally worth it. Congrats on a beautiful finish.
