Our 2026 Stay at Home Round Robin (SAHRR) begins today, January 14th and runs until February 24th. We post prompts each week and encourage quilters to make a quilt. The final quilts are proudly paraded on March 24th. So, let’s get our creative minds working and maybe pick up and abandoned block and make it into a quilt!
What Should I Consider?
When choosing your block, here are a few things to consider.
- Do you have a block to use?
- Do you want to make a block? You can make one that helps elongate your center, say 8 x 16″ for a different way to start.
- Do you have fabric to go with the block, especially background or more of the feature fabric? If you are doing a good size quilt, you will need a good half yard of a few lights, mediums and darks. Your background could need 2 yards or even more. Of course, they can be various shades too, so there are lots of opportunities for creativity.
- How big do you want your quilt to be? I like to plan this a little. Think about your subsequent rows. If you add 6 rows that can get to be a pretty big quilt. In the past few years, I often combine two prompts and make cornerstones one week and blocks for the border another week. I have a limitation on my quilting frame so I will try to keep mine at less than 50″ wide!
- What might you do with it? Who is going to get it and how will it be used – a wall hanging, a baby quilt or a quilt for your bed?
- Will it hold your interest? When we work on things like this, there are unexpected challenges. Fall in love with it, as you will be working with it for awhile.

My Center Block Reveal
As of this past weekend, I still had not figured out what I was going to do for this year’s SAHRR. I found the fabric I wanted to use, and that helped lead me to a decision about the block. I loved that gear fabric – second from the bottom – and that is going to “drive” some of my decisions about the blocks I make.
I am using this block as my center. It was in the Block Base program I have for Electric Quilt, another one of the blocks from Barbara Brackman’s Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns. It is a wheel block, which I thought would be fun with the gear fabric and I really love it.
I have included a pdf here for you, if you want to try it. I used freezer paper piecing tomake it and am pleased with the way it turned out.

We tally up your links and award prizes after the parade of quilt. Each link is eligible for a prize!

Ooh! That palette was pretty much mine when I was an ambassador for IB, now Lumin, so your colours are singing my song! Love the wheel block, and I made a quilt for my nephew years ago using gears fabric – he’s a mountain biker – so this will be fun to watch grow. I’m in, pretty sure which of my (cough) many orphan blocks I’m going to use.
