TGIFF: A’s Dinos! – A Finished Quilt

Welcome to TGIFF – Thank Goodness Its Finished Friday – on my blog. We open Thursday evening and close Saturday at midnight to give bloggers from all over the world to post their finished quilt projects. For those of us who host, it is so much fun seeing your FINISHES on this linky party and I for one can’t wait to see what you share.

Today I am sharing another baby quilt, one in my series of Elizabeth Hartman patterns, which I made for a grand nephew.

The Quilt

I love the Elizabeth Hartman patterns and when my grand nephew arrived I knew this would be made for him. Now, I dragged my feet making this quilt, for no good reason, but that is how 2025 and my quilting are going. You can find this pattern here, on Amazon* or Fat Quarter Shop* or at Elizabeth Hartman‘s pattern site.

I went on retreat in January and began here. These were fun to make and then I stopped for a bit.

In May, on another retreat, a second set of blocks were made on the first full day.

I made the following blocks the second full day.

And, finally, in August, I finished the top. I really love the bright colors. I decided to do as the designer does, and alternate the colors between the the versions. I might try another time to use different colors, but what is done is done!

Quilting the Quilt

I quilted it on Tabitha, my lovely HQ Simply Sixteen with Prostitcher. I used the pantograph, “” which comes with Prostitcher. It was perfect for this quilt. I also used the Superior So Fine #494 Pastel Blue in the top and Glide white in the bobbin.

This gives you a good idea of how the stitching looks on the quilt. It really is a fun stipple and perfect for this little boy quilt.

I also did the binding on machine, as I do 90% of the time now. If I hand bound it, well, it still would not be finished! The way I do this, especially when there is a border with no points to cut off, is that I stitched the binding to the back, then press, then turn to the front. I use a few clips. I generally clip the corners and then move one along as I sew. But, when I get to the corner, you can see how the stiletto comes in handy for holding them down.

I love the backing fabric I chose….dinosaurs!

And here it is with a little flip to show how the back and the front work together.

  1. The dino quilt is so cute! The baby is going to love this when he’s older and knows about dinosaurs. I like to bind quilts entirely by machine also and I too use a stiletto on the corners. Happy stitching!

  2. I have no finishes to report but I am working on three. I love that cute quilt – how wide do you make your binding?

Super cute dino quilt, Kathleen! The greenery in the quilt sets them all off nicely! And what a perfect backing!!! I wonder how many of those EH baby quilts you’ve made now.

  4. Your dinosaur quilt is so cute, perfect for a little boy. I love the backing! Your quilting looks great. I do my bindings the same way. I quit hand stitching to the front when I found out my bindings were coming loose in the wash – how embarrassing – and I had been so proud of my well-hidden hand stitches.
Did you have to take a class to learn the Pro Stitcher, or did you learn by doing? My dream goal is to get a longer quilting frame (I have the Little Foot) and eventually get the Pro Stitcher.

  5. A sweet quilt that will be lots of fun for a little one to examine and cuddle. I don’t have any finishes to share today, but am working on some Hallowe’en fun stuff. Have a great week

  6. Well, that turned out really cute! Her patterns are so much fun. The backing fabric is perfect! I also use my stiletto to help turn that corner (I’m trying to figure out a way to take photos of that for a quick tutorial). Nice finish! I’m sure the quilt will be well enjoyed!

  7. You could be so proud that this wonderfull quilt is finished. Under this cool quilt cuddeling and sleeping, playing will be the best place on earth for the young boy.
Its interesting how different it is to sew on binding. I attach it by machine on the right sight, the turn it to the back and sew it on by handstiches. Its always a say good bye time to a quilt when it is on my knees for that work.

Gah — this is the cutest! I don’t know why EH’s dinosaurs — and your version — are so appealing to me, a 50-something gal who knows very little about dinos. But I may just need to make one for myself! : )
