This is the second version of a quilt I made in 2023. When I look back on this year, my sewing slowed down and other projects took priority. The good news is, I had this all cut out so when I got back to it, it went together quickly. Finally, version 2 is done and I can share it with you!
Making the quilt
As I admitted the first time, it is still true that I could not resist this fabric, No Place Like OM by Dear Stella. My first version went to my yoga teacher, and it feels so right for her to have it. This one does not yet have a specific destination. I love all the activities it reminds us that can be good for us: embroidery, hand sewing, seeing your friends, drinking more water, yoga, tea, or knitting anyone?
The pattern I selected was exactly the same, Broad Strokes by Fabric Cafe. It is the book 3-Yard Quilts on the Double and you can get it at the Fat Quarter Shop* or Amazon*.
I have no memory of when I put it together, neither does my phone (my alternate memory bank)! ‘Tis the season and my only conclusion is that it was sewn by elves; that is my story and I am sticking with it. Because none of this was planned (making two of this specific quilt), I do remember I was short a full sized piece, so I pieced one of the blocks. It is barely noticeable, so you have to look for it in the finished quilt. One other note on this, the original pattern calls for 3 fabrics, but I used 2 for the center block and just alternated them. I think it gives a nice effect and you get to enjoy both fabrics from this collection.
I quilted it on Tabitha, my HandiQuilter Simply 16. It was in limbo for awhile, as my tablet had to be reimaged due to a failed windows update! UGH. I also am missing my Bernina, which froze for some odd reason, so it has been a month or more of machine misery. However, once the tablet was reinstalled, it quilted liked a dream!
I love this pantograph – a freebie from Deklan Kelly called Wobble Arches Lite. He has a shop on Etsy and you can sign up there for his email list, including freebies. In fact, there is a link to this on Instagram where you get the free copy of the design! My friend, Nancy, at Grace and Peace Quilting hooked me up and I am glad she did.
This was not the best light – fall/winter in Maine – but I went out of my comfort zone! One the top of the quilt I used Superior So Fine! #403 Putty, but on the back I went with Glide Sand! It is awesome – as you can really see the design. I think of it as rainbows across the quilt. Now, that has me thinking about using a variegated thread to get that effect the next time I use that panto!

Yes, I have 3 baby quilts to make. One should be for a sweet grand nephew, who I have yet to meet. The others are for my son’s frat brothers, whose wives are expecting in the new year. They are all (so far) getting the same baby panel – I just scored a few more. Some design challenges await in the new year and a I know I will be hopping with the FQS in the spring.

I would definitely think of this pantograph as happy rainbows across the quilt and think using a variegated rainbow thread would be really fun for a future quilt. I’m sorry to hear you had tablet and Bernina technical issues. I’m glad at least the tablet is resolved and hope the Bernina isn’t too hard to get fixed.

I am glad to hear your machine is purring away once again! It’s always fun to change up a pattern a bit to see what happens. You really do need to try a variegated thread using that design.
