Sirena – A Finished Quilt

Hoarding fabric is a thing. I held on to this collection from my time as an Island Batik Ambassador as I loved it. I wasn’t sure what to do with it but when Catherine Cureton of Running Doe Quilts and Villa Rosa cards selected “Pinked” for a June Top Along, I was sure that it would be perfect. Thus, Sirena in all her glory was born. This is probably the only quilt I get done in the Top Along, which runs from May to September (I think), but at least I did one!

Making the Quilt

I had fun making this quilt, but was glad to have a committee to help. Even the simplest patterns can trip you up. There was one tricky little placement of the rectangles to make the zig zag and with a lot of help from my retreat buddies, I only took out one seam. Honestly, that was the hardest part of making the quilt was figuring out that placement. The directions were clear, but it was confusing me for some reason! Other than that, it was a quick assembly – I highly recommended as a fast quilt.

Furthermore, I have learned that retreat is a great place to get a couple of these fast quilts moving. I was so glad I made it; it really was a quick fun one and is so graphically pleasing. It also helped that this used a set of 2 1/2″ strips, so there was almost no cutting. You could make this a tad longer or wider with borders; it finished at about 46″ x 56″.

Quilting

After the last quilt, this was so fast. Tabitha, my HandiQuilter Simply 16 cooperated beautifully. I used a pattern called Free-Motion Background Mixer Pebble from Prostitcher. I am a member, so don’t let that price decieve you. I will probably stop the membership later this year, as I have so many designs and I can make my own, but for the past year or so, this has been fun picking up designs. For this quilt, I was choosing between two different patterns and decided that this one would be it. It won on two criteria: 1) it mimicked some of the fabric and 2) it was the quicker of the designs to quilt out (I can tell in my software). It would take half the time of the other one that was in contention. Honestly, I was ready for a quick quilting experience.

I loved the way the bubbles looked on the quilt. I used Superior So Fine #471 Galcier on the top and bottom, a beautiful shade of teal.

And in no time it was finished. Fortunately, there were leftover strips from the collection that were used for the binding.

We went for a photo shoot, bringing the mermaid quilt to a local cove.

And also to a local dock. Storms are coming in, the remnants of Deby, and the clouds were beginning to gather.

I do love this quilt…it doesn’t yet have a home. This weekend is another art sale on the porch, so maybe someone will take “Sirena” home.
