Tips for Foundation Piecing

I was on a zoom party with a few friends and we were doing foundation paper piecing without sewing through the paper. Here are a few hints if you are interested.

There are two videos I recommend. This first video shows you how to do it using freezer paper. You never have to rip it out! The freezer paper also acts as a stabilizer. The second video I recommend helps you understand how to assure that your pieces fit – a persistent problem.

Here are a few other things I recommend – good tools. Use a good freezer paper for your printer. Many local quilt stores will have it, but I do sometimes buy it online*. The freezer paper can also be used to cut out your pieces. I would print an extra copy and cut on the lines – then press to fabric and cut 1/2″ around. I also leave a little extra around the pattern I will sew with – again another 1/4″ to the trim line so you again make sure your pieces are big enough.

I also use the Add A Quarter* ruler. It is easy and it makes the process go faster.

Now it’s your turn to post, and the rules are simple – write up a tip or group of tips or a tutorial that is quilting or sewing-related and link that post below. The linky party is open from 12:01 am on the 21st (only this month), through midnight on 31st. The post does not have to be new but should be one that hasn’t been linked to Tips and Tutorials in the past. If you don’t have a blog, please send it to me ( and I will post your tip or tutorial for you!

You are invited to the Inlinkz link party!

Hi Kathleen, thanks for recommending those two videos. I’ve been wanting to try that technique for a while. When I finally get to it, I’ll come back and watch those videos. I have a wonderful book quilt that is a UFO that I will get to sometime this year. Thanks for the party!
