Fab Farm Sew Along – Pig – Block 7

Welcome to Block #7 of the Fab Farm Sew Along and the pig! This little piggy did not go to market but instead is going to a quilt and will be named Penelope, a proper name for a lovely pig. 3 more blocks to go and we will be ready to assemble the quilt. I don’t have a post planned for that but may if there is something I do differently from the Elizabeth Hartman’s pattern. And, a bonus this week is that there is a co-host, Nancy of Grace and Peace Quilting. Be sure to check our her piggy!

Cutting The Block

This one has a substantial number of pieces but the pig is quite symmetrical. I am believing that makes this easier some how when it comes to the piecing. 90% are 2 and 4 pieces so keep an eye on that when you are cutting.

The cutting instructions for the large and small quilts is on page32 in the book. Again, in order to make the cutting and identification of the pieces easy, let’s use SEPC (scan, enlarge, print, cut). Since we have been doing this for a few weeks, I will let it go at that.

Refer to this link if you want to know more about how I do this.

Making Block 7

The eye unit goes together quite easily.

Next up are the ears. Now, here is my first suggestion, and after you finish finish constructing Figure 3, look to the book right on page 34, figure 9. There are additional background pieces for the ear.

HINT #1: Add Pieces S and T for the ears before going on to the body unit.

You then begin the body unity, which includes the snout. This could be a bit confusing, but it really isn’t.

HINT #2: The snout is in the body unit and constructed before you really get to the body

You then proceed with the chin and the belly unit to finish the body. I was tempted to put the head together before this, but waited.

As you get it all laid out it goes pretty quickly. I think it being symmetrical did in fact make it simpler. You put the piece Y on the side, which makes it a little less symmetrical, but for the bulk of the piecing it seems you do everything twice!

And before you know it, this little piggy is ready to join the other farm friends on the quilt.

The Finished Block

The pig is ready to join the farm and is a fine addition. I loved making her and really enjoyed all the pink. The fabrics I used are a little less textured them some of the others, but the dimples are just a nice touch. And, the farm is growing by one each week:

Sally the Strawberry,
Harriet the Horse,
Gertrude the Goat,
Celia the Cow,
Charlotte the Chicken,
Bertha the Bee, and
Penelope the Pig.

Linky Party

There will be a linky party for the rest of the blocks, 6-10 on the last week, and then a linky party for tops. You can join the other linky party for blocks 1-5 here.

Oh, that is a very cute block! I was going to work on my challenge quilt today, but maybe I’ll make the piggy instead – I’ve been finding all kinds of ways to avoid the challenge quilt (LOL) – my spice cabinet looks fabulous after clearing that yesterday in lieu of the challenge quilt . . .

Brings back memories of growing up on the farm, except your piggy is cute and he doesn’t stink, LOL

    What a sweet little pig.

I think Penelope is my favourite one so far! I do have a bit of an affinity for ’les cochons’ since I used Les Trois Petits Cochons aka The Three Little Pigs play to teach my grade sevens French, and it was a blast and they loved it. The quilt is shaping up so nicely.
