Life Preservers – A Finished Quilt

I enjoy working with a fabric a second time and the seaside collection, and I intentional purchased a bit of this for the summer art sale on the island that I live on. For this quilt, I chose a pattern from Just One Charm Pack* by Cheryl Brickey. It was fun and fast to make and I highly recomment it.

Making Life Preservers

As I was planning this quilt, I purchased an off white background, perfect, but I realized there were too many off white pieces with some printing but not enough to read another color. So, off to the store and this fabulous grey would be perfect. Even now, I wish some of those pieces had a little more color in them! I make it a point to use the fabric in the group if I am doing something like this, so here is what happened.

I began sewing it together on retreat in April.

Soon it was a full top. A narrow blue border would be added at home.

I think you do get the illusion of the life preserve, but maybe next time I make my own charm pack!

Quilting Ships Ahoy

I felt this quilt definitely needed a wave pantograph. I had two choices and decided to use Catching Bubbles from My Creative Stitches. It is a great design and stitched flawlessly.

I love the texture this pantograph created. Like its sibling quilt, I used the same Superior So Fine and Decobob in the the bobbin. The backing too is the same.

This rocking and rolling wavy design is really fun for the quilt.

I love the striped binding – which I sewed to the back – then sewed by machine to the front.

Glamour Shots

Then, I decided to take it for some photos around the island.

First, it was a bit too windy, but what a beautiful day for the sky and water!

We moved on to the local lobster shack….a little more water and sky….not as much wind.

Then a few shots from the front porch. Not sure what happened in the last one! Pollen is out of control but I don’t think that was it. It is hard to get the quilting on the back to show in the photos, which is funny as it is so obvious in real life.

This was my favorite with the life preserver in it! Funny that you need one on land, but you just may if you have too much fun at Reggae Sunday. Thanks for tolerating my photo shoot day, but it was fun to take it around and enjoy the gorgeous weather – 65 and not a cloud in the sky – perfection.

That’s one of my favorite patterns in Cheryl’s first book. I think the quilting is perfect for it! How tricky can lighting be; I bet the texture and quilting look fantastic. The outdoor photoshoot looks like a lot of fun. 🙂

What a great nautical quilt! I was literally just looking at this book on Amazon! I didn’t order it, but I did put it on my list. You may have made up my mind for me. 🙂

Hi Kathleen! WOWEE. What a great finish. As I enjoyed the photos and the photo shoot, this quilt really came to life. I just adore the Bubbles/Waves panto you selected. It’s just perfect, I think. Not too dense, and those little bubbles just give the piece a bit of whimsy. The think the charm pack works, too. I totally see the life preserver inspiration. Great job! {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne

That last shot – swoon! Love this quilt, and the book it’s from! I need to make some more from it. I love that panto – now, is it computerized where you set it to go and walk away or are you following the design from the back of the machine using your laser?
