Fab Farm Sew Along – Bee – Block 6

There’s a buzz buzz sound in my sewing studio this week! The busy bee for the Fab Farm SAL is the block we are working on. I see huge bees outside my studio in the lilacs at this time of year. In fact, the buzz can be quite loud and often, I am convinced, they are in the studio! Let’s leave the busy outside bees to their work and see what the Elizabeth Hartman pattern has in store for us.

Next week, Nancy of Grace and Peace Quilting is co-hosting, so be sure to check our her piggy!

Cutting The Block

This one has so few pieces, it feels as if it is a bit of a cheat from the others, but that is okay. A quick block is nice and this one sure fits the bill.

The cutting instructions for the large and small quilts begins on page 29 . Again, in order to make the cutting and identification of the pieces easy, let’s use SEPC (scan, enlarge, print, cut). Since we have been doing this for a few weeks, I will let it go at that.

Refer to this link if you want to know more about how I do this.

Making Block 6

HINT #1: The wings are pieced the same way…with 3 fold over squares on each wing piece.

There is an easy mistake to make. The body is similar, in that it gets 4 squares on it, but the directions are in two different sections step 4 and 5.

HINT #2: Watch for the bottom squares of the bees body in two different spots.

When assembling the units, there are two places I watched to match up, shown in these pictures.

HINT#3: In figure 5, you may want to be careful sewing the bottom and top wings together and then the body to the wings.

This was a very fast block to make. I really enjoyed it and look forward to block 7, the pig!

The Finished Block

This is a bee-u-tiful bee if I may so! I believe Elizabeth Hartman named all her other blocks that I have made and it is making me think I must name these….

Sally the Strawberry,
Harriet the Horse,
Gertrude the Goat,
Celia the Cow,
Charlotte the Chicken, and
Bertha the Bee!

Linky Party

There will be a linky party for the rest of the blocks, 6-10 on the last week, and then a linky party for tops. You can join the other linky party for blocks 1-5 here.
