Barn Quilt – TGIFF

Welcome to the second to last TGIFF of the year. In case you don’t know Thank Goodness It’s Finished Friday is an intercontinental blog hop each Friday to show off your finishes (we begin Thursday evening and end Saturday at noon for that reason). If you are interested in hosting, sign ups are on for next year and the explanation and link are on this page. Yes, I already grabbed a few dates as I like how it keeps me moving along on my projects.

This beauty was finished in March. And then, you know March 2020. Everything shut down. I thought I would get it quilted at the end of the summer maybe. I needed to use a larger longarm but the covid restrictions kept pushing the deadline. This was on my list to finish and I really wanted to quilt it, but the end of the year was approaching so I contacted my quilting bud, Dorien. You can read about Dorien here – she’s famous! Also, she is my personal trainer – and again Covid is not helping this part of the project either.

Now, on to the particulars of this finish. If you want to see it’s growth, here are the links to the Barn Block of the Month I did with Sherry Shish of Powered by Quilting. I did draw it up in Electric Quilt* because I like to know exactly what I am doing, so I enter my fabrics and test it all out.

So, for the quilting Glide thread was used in a cream color Glide called Pearl. It was perfect. It takes on a lot of the other colors as it passes through them. I maybe could have gone with the dark teal, but it was pretty dark and there are lots of lighter sections on the quilt.

The quiltin

The pattern we used for quilting is called Fast Feathers Edge to Edge. It was pretty forgiving as I had a few sections that had a little fullness. I knew this and was prepared to deal with it as I quilted it, but Dorien did a fabulous job taking care of my problem areas! You wouldn’t even know it.

Here’s a slideshow of the quilt being quilted, another close up of the front and the back. I really love the way the pattern worked out on this quilt!

It is perfect on the bed! There are so many things I am pleased about with this finish. It is one of my UFOs for this year, and is one more done towards my PhD in 2020. It does not have a destination yet, but I may keep it as I rather love it.

Such a pretty finish, Kathleen! Great job! Did those feathers really quilt up “fast”, as it says in the panto title?

Hi Kathleen! WOW! That quilting design is just perfect for this application. The design looks fabulous and it really gives the piece some movement. Nice choice! It looks fabulous on your bed. I definitely think you should keep it. It’s a nice reminder of overcoming 2020 with a fab finish in spite of COVID and all the barriers attempting to stop you. I sure wish I had a finish to share today! ~smile~ Roseanne

What a gorgeous finish, Kathleen! I love everything about it — the colors, the fabrics, the quilting design and the thread (Pearl is one of my favorite shades of Glide, too). Congratulations on squeaking in such a beautiful finish right before the end of the year!

Lovely finish and well worth the wait to get it done. Must feel terrific after the year we’ve had. Thanks for sharing on Wednesday Wait Loss.

Oh Kathleen, I love this quilt. I love the dark center that is the focus and then my eye moves to the border and then to the four quadrants. Your eyes will move with the value – from dark to light and then if you still wish to explore there is detail in between the four quadrants. It is subtle and not for everyone. Way to finish the year – with a bang!!! Happy New Year 2021!!!
