Cassidy’s Quilt – From the Heart Blog Hop

Carol of Just Let Me Quilt invited bloggers to make a small gift that you would give to someone and share a pattern, tutorial, or link if you have one for the gift idea. I wasn’t quite sure what to do, but then I remembered I promised my step-grandniece would get a quilt with her newborn sister. Her sister’s quilt is not done, but I can explain that.

Edith was born early and spent 2 months in the NIC; she is getting an Elizabeth Hartman pattern called “Delightful Dessert*” for her quilt. Her cousin, received one that is similar, that I ran the Awesome Ocean SAL for, and I wanted hers to be similar – Their mothers are sisters. Cassidy’s quilt is for a 7-year old and I thought it should be a bit more mature, so I went with pink and purple as suggested.

I don’t have any sisters, but I see the way sisters care for one another (my nieces) and think there is a special bond there. So, this simple design came to me and it is really a quick make.

I kept adjusting the pattern to make it work with what I had. I had some 10″ layer cake pinks and purples. A few weeks ago, I bought the background as I knew it would be perfect for something. The border came from Bernie’s store, Needle and Foot, and was a “surprise” she picked for me as another fabric was short and I thought I would make up the difference in a fun fabric. Who knew it would go into such a great quilt.

I also had some charm packs – Alison Glass, Speckled and Spotted that had the perfect pinks. I don’t have a lot of pinks in my stash, but I found enough to make the plan work. The center of this quilt (the double heart is 36″ square”) so it can be used alone as a baby quilt. Furthermore, it is a quilt that has a few options for changing it up for what you need. It is easy to adjust the size, the pattern is written to finish at 48″ x 64″. It is plenty big enough for a twin size bed or a lap quilt. But you could add some other borders or even another layer of hearts. You could also add fabrics that are fun in the wide top and bottom borders or special blocks for the particular child. I am sure I will be making more of these.

This is the live studio space!

Believe it or not, the top was really fast to make. 10 large HST, 4 small HST and 4 charms make up the hearts, along with 2 large squares of the purple and the background. I probably made this in less than 3 hours, with some fussing over fabrics. As I looked at the pattern, I decided floating the heart would be a good thing. You could add an inner border, but I was at the limit of my small longarm (SS Tabitha) so I stopped at 48″ – a quilter’s prerogative!

So, yes, the pattern is available for free for this hop. It is in my store; done that way so I can have an idea of how many people download it. It takes some time to do these things, so it is good to know how many people actually download it. I will keep it free until my birthday, the day after the election, and will then charge $2 for it. You could make it up yourself, but you don’t have to. This is a great gift – for the holidays or just for so – and a fast make when you need it.

It is not yet done, it needs binding. Right now I am planning on publishing the final details on Friday!

Hope you enjoy the hop and be sure to stop by the other bloggers…I have a little catching up to do but can’t wait to see what everyone has created.

You did a great job on the quilt, Kathleen. I love the border fabric; I have some of that from Sandra’s Beothuk QAL awhile ago (still isn’t quilted). This quilt will be so great for baby quilts and fun that it can be individualized. Thanks for sharing!

Sweet! The quilting looks really great, too. I’m looking forward to seeing the final finish. The center heart looks perfect for a Jack’s Basket quilt.

Hi Kathleen! I think Cassidy will just adore this quilt. Miss seven-year-old will just snuggle under those pretty colors and wrap herself in your love. I have yet to meet a young lady that age that doesn’t like those colors! It seems to be required or hardwired somehow. I look forward to seeing the reveal on Friday – how are you quilting it, what color binding did you chose?! Really nice job. ~smile~ Roseanne

What a sweet and very personnel gift, that any little girl would love. I am in the “I’ve got no sisters either” club, and had boys, but I marvel at the connection I see with sisters. My new granddaughter may just be getting a heart quilt of her own! Thanks for sharing.
