Welcome to Block 8 of the QAL by the Sea! This month, Laura Piland of Slice of Pi Quilts designed a fantastic block. She always just gets right to the essence of the item, in her clean modern style.

You will love making this block. There is certainly plenty of ways to change it up a bit and I can’t wait to see what you do.

Before I send you to Laura’s page, here is a bit of local lore in Portland, ME. This fence appeared a few years ago, and I think it is quite elegant. It replace one that people loved because it had love locks on it. The fence was in danger of falling into the harbor and needed to be replaced. Some of it was saved and one day, I will go looking for them again.
You can find instructions for her block here:

Hi Kathleen! What a cool block and an even cooler fence guarding the marina. That should definitely be an inspiration for a while quilt. You’re almost to the wrap up on this segment – I look forward to seeing all these blocks come together. ~smile~ Roseanne
What a wonderful block, goes perfectly with your theme.
Wonderful block, it was really cool seeing the inspiration photo!
Oh goodness, they just keep getting better and better. Love it!
This is a really cool block, Kathleen! That fence is awesome. I had to go google the Love Lock Fence and saw how it could be a safety hazard. I love hearing the history behind the blocks! Thanks!
PS: I should have said history of the fence instead of blocks! Fingers got ahead of my brain! LOL I am glad they were able move the Love Locks fence to another area.
Love seeing the inspiration for Laura’s block. Nice execution and gradation in values.
Very cool block!!!
