I spent quite a bit of time trying to add up all the fabrics. I will give you my best advice on how to deal with a sampler 12 different blocks. Make each block work. Don’t worry about lattice/borders for a quilt until the end. The important thing is to make each block shine.
Backgrounds: You will need a few larger pieces for a couple of the blocks, 13 x 13. Some are white, some are blue, some are sky, some are water and some are green…YIKES. This makes it a little hard doesn’t it. Don’t worry about having it all ready, but you may want to begin collecting some fabrics. Here are my best recommendations.
2 Fat Quarters (18 x 22) of each of these:
2 Fat Eighths (9 x 22) of each in different shades:
Maybe a few ringers, some fun prints that you have to add in!
You have some shark fabric, put it in the pile.
This is a current collection by Clothworks, called By the Seashore, and would go a long way in the QAL by the Sea. Some may want a more subtle approach.
We know how well Grunge works. Sherry at Powered by Quilting has used it for many of our QAL blocks. Here’s a new collection from Moda, called Thatched and I love this. This would sure be fun.
I could get excited by some of the fabrics in this collection, called Turtle Bay by Maywood. The collections lack the variety of colors we will use but some of the feature fabrics could be perfect.
You will need fusible web! I like printing my pieces on Clover Wonder Fuse*, it saves me a step. Try it, you will like it and one packet will get you through most of the program. This is a little smaller than a standard sheet, so you may refer Heat N Bond*. If not, plan on having about 2 yards of 22″ wide fusible.
You can get all the basics about the QAL on my prior blog article. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out. We begin on August 4th at 8 am EST with our first block release!
