Another Finish – A Jelly Roll Rug

The Jelly Roll Project

I started this rug last spring on my annual Spring Fling Quilting Weekend with Rising Star Quilters in 2019. Of course, you know I thought that during this year’s Spring Fling I would easily conquer this project. But, like so many things this year, it was cancelled due to Covid-19. Truth be told, I hadn’t done much last year, just sewed a few strips.

Anyway, I finally got back to it last week and edited the jelly roll as there were a few strips I didn’t like. The directions mentioned pressing for the rectangular version and I did that, after sewing a few strips together.

I should have looked closer as my rug was a bit curvy. And, my last edge needs to be redone (it goes uphill). However, I knew it would go in my bedroom in Maine, mostly as a hopping off point for Percy to jump onto our bed; it helps with the wood floors. Perfection, therefore, would not be needed with this project.

So, what’s a quilter to do? I tried starching the heck out of it. It helped a bit. the above picture, I have washed it and then laid it out to dry after pushing, pulling and patting it into better shape. Its not perfect, but it will do! There was little information on this on the web, call me surprised!

I had heard about this problem with the oval ones, but didn’t foresee it with the rectangle. Some of the strips were longer than others and that should have been a big clue. However, I am pleased enough with it and since it is for me, I won’t worry it, but now I am curious to try it again and see what happens. Hobbs is making a fusible batting strip*, maybe that would stabilize it. I used the Bosal Batting strips* and still have plenty so I may play with homemade strips. You can count on it that if I find out more, I will let you know. Just to be clear, I am pleased with this finish, which is both a OMG and a 3rd Quarter Goal!

Yes, saving the floors and Percy from the embarrassment of his back legs not quite making it will be good.

I think you’ve resolved the issue quite well. It will serve its purpose and look lovely. I think Percy will be delighted.

It did a pretty good job. I will be curious to to see if I can do better on the next one. Percy wouldn’t have noticed but it was a little too curvy for me to look at all the time!

I think it looks great! I few curved edges on a rug are unlikely to hurt you or Percy. I hope it helps him jump onto the bed. I’ve had the jelly roll rug pattern for over a year but still haven’t made one!

It is fun to do. No one will be hurt and I even decided I don’t need to rebind the one edge right now! Its mindless in some ways, but maybe needs to be paid a little more attention – kinda surprised me on the rectangle one.

Hi Kathleen! I hadn’t heard there were issues with these types of rugs but thanks for passing on your experience. I have wanted to make one and I think I would prefer the rectangle over the oval, if I ever get around to making one. I’ll be interested to see if you find a difference with the batting. Nice job and I think Percy will like it as a launching point. ~smile~ Roseanne

Oh Kathleen, this is so cool. It makes me ache for autumn and cinnamon spice.
