This is my second year joining in on the Monthly Color Blocks with Jen form Patterns by Jen. I always enjoy her blocks, something a little different in each one. This month’s block is fun, as it combines two blocks that are often combined in quilts, but not in a block that I can think of.

This bird may be one of my new favorites. In the Wikipedia article, there were two things that caught my attention. The first was how desirable these birds are in the garden as they love to eat bugs. The second is that they have a place in Iroquois mysticism and are said to ward off the icy power of Sawiskera, or Flint, the spirit of winter. Their call does something miraculous – it causes winter to flee and the ice to melt. Now, that is help I would welcome most any winter!

These are simple pieces and a simple block. I love the blue and the way this turned out. So many times I think that it will be too dull with the same fabric line, but then something electric happens and it looks terrific. I hope you enjoy your block and this first day of June.

Pretty blues in that block, Kathleen! I need to get to work on my block!
I liked them more than I thought I would. Its an easy one, you will have no trouble.
I love bluebirds! Fun to make a block associated with them!
Hi Kathleen! Well, aren’t you on top of things for June 1st?! I just LOVE the royal blue and it looks fabulous with the lighter blue. That bird is beautiful – I wish I would see them around my house to chase off winter and melt the ice next winter. ~smile~ Roseanne
I love this block. I don’t know why as I usually go for more elegant styles. I was hosting this month, although I don’t see the facebook notifications, but now know what to do…. Yes, I would love to see this bird in winter warding off the ice and snow!
I haven’t join up an any groups for a while now….. love your block and bird. Blues are so pretty. I want a blue car……was that a whine?
I know, this one is an easy one to do – once a month. No, I don’t think you whined, but blue is a favorite color for cars for me too. Hope you get the one you want!
I love those blues, but they look more icy than a beautiful sky! Always love a blue block!!!
They are a really fun grouping…I rather love them too.
What a cool block and interesting bird!
The legends are so interesting around different animals. I love learning them!
