Welcome to Block 6 the Awesome Ocean Sew Along (#AOSAL) and Preppy the Whale. We are now halfway through the blocks!! Today we do have a guest host so be sure to check out Rose’s blog at Something Rose Made at today too! As a reminder, the Awesome Ocean pattern was written by Elizabeth Hartman and this sew along encourages you to purchase her pattern (information below) and learn from my mistakes (you can see the links for prior blocks below or at the top of this page).

Hint 1: Fabric Considerations for this block:
Nothing Special
Hint 2: Time to Prep/Make Block:
Prep time is about 1/2 – 3/4 hour of cutting and about 3/4 an hour of
sewing.
Hint 3: Piecing F-M-I
I was a little confused when I looked at the picture, but this is what happens, piece F goes on top of M. Trimmed; then I on top of M.\
Check pieces N, M, G – I added a 1/4″ to my M to make it work

Hint 4: Look at the instructions
I saw this a few days before I pieced, but forgot about it and was puzzeled when it was too big. So, yes, read the instructions as well as looking at the pictures.

Hint 5: Use a stiletto or even a seam ripper
I love using my stiletto to hold the end of those pieces as they go through the machine. It helps them stay steady and not get wonky (yes its a technical sewing term in my studio) at the end!

We are winding down on the blocks – 6 done and 3 more to go. I am getting really excited to see these ocean buddies in a quilt. I am sure you are.

Here’s what you need to play along:
1. Get the pattern from my amazon affiliate link* or
from the designer directly or in your local store.

Here’s the linky party – for both blocks 6, 7 & 8! I needed to change this due to the other linky party I am running on the 22nd of each month, so there will be one linky for the month for the Awesome Ocean blocks (unless I figure something else out). It will be on each page so you don’t need to worry!

Linking Up:
Hi Kathleen! Your Preppy blocks look so darn cute. What??!! We should READ the instructions and not just LOOK at the photos. It was like you were directing that suggestion at me – guilty as charged. You guys are nearing the end – this is going to end up so cute! ~smile~ Roseanne
I know, I didn’t see it and of course rippit! rippit! The frog was croaking in my sewing studio. I am loving this and better yet, the baby arrived, Annaleigh 7.5 lbs and 17 1/2 inches! Can’t wait to meet her, but better finish her quilt. Hoping to be a little ahead and get the rest of them done this week!
I am guilty…..that is what they make seam rippers for…ha ha. If I had paid better attention I would have caught this mistake but oh well. We just have three blocks left? I will have to look. Love yours
Me too, which is why I knew to warn people!
Every week I think you made the best ones yet, it still holds true. The whales are my favorite of all of them so far;)
You are so sweet. I really am enjoying it and the baby is here…so I better speed up my behind the scenes work!
Love these whales! I’m behind but hoping to catch up soon–though I’ll do Tony the Turtle first to be sure I’m ready! 🙂 Thanks for all the tips!
