2020 Monthly Color Challenge – February

The inspiration bird for this month’s block is the This little block is a fun and cheery way to start the year. This is the second of the 2020 Monthly Color Challenge Blocks from Patterns by Jen. If you are in need of catching up, you can find out more about the blocks here. I love that Jen used birds as the inspiration for her colors and thought about the goldfinches flitting about in the yard as I was making these. You can see my January post here.

The inspiration bird for this month’s block is the the Indigo Bunting which is quite teal in this picture. Teal is one of those great colors that has a lot of variety – whether it is a greener or bluer teal tint is always interesting to me.

I am getting great results whenever I use this tool, the Clearly Perfect Slotted Trimmers*. If you don’t have one, get one – it makes HST (half square triangles soooo easy and is good for almost any pattern. I only have one and carry it back and forth to our weekend place because every time I don’t have it I want to scream.

I also wanted to share something I do a lot and it really helps me. I edit my photos, like the one above, to be cropped with no borders. I then import this into Electric Quilt 8* and have a file ready to start working on my 2020 quilt when all my blocks are done! It lets me start playing, long before I am finished but lets it be started as I begin the project.

There is a linkup with prizes at the end of each month. Last year, I used batik scraps but wanted a different feel this year. Also, Jen charges for blocks after the month is over, so at least sign up now if you are interested and start getting the blocks.

I have these two pieces to finish (actually there is a third too which require borders and bindings – so it shouldn’t be too hard, just want to get them done. They are row by row blocks from a few years ago and need to be finished. I will link up with Elm Street Quilts on this project, my OMG for February! I’ll be back Wednesday with the last bit of piecing for Sherry’s Block of the Month then early next week with my Swap Mob bag! I am also doing some secret sewing….for the Modern Quilt Guild mini swap so no pics on that until the after 2/21 when my swap partner receives hers.

Just put one of those rulers into my amazon cart! Thanks for the tip.
I love the teal block! We have indigo buntings up here in the summer and they are one of my favorite birds! Thanks for sharing your work and ideas!

Hi Kathleen! Oh these fabrics!!! LOVE this block and the colors. Aren’t you just the smarty pants by uploading your blocks into EQ8. That’s a fabulous idea! Then you can play around with borders, layouts, even the size if you want the finish to be larger. That’s just a fabulous idea. ~smile~ Roseanne

Oh you are just too smart with the edit and import into EQ8!!! Damn I mean darn why didn’t I ever think of that with RSC?! Love love this block; I spy some Botanical Blenders if my memory serves me right, from bluprint!

You are smart! I love using EQ8 to make these things easy. I can post something about that one day. It is pretty simple. Yes, the Monthly Color Challenge will be all the botanicals which I got at a good price. I am missing one color way, but may remedy that someday.
