Barn Quilt BOM – Month 2 Blocks

Welcome to Month 2 for Sherry Shish’s Barn Quilt BOM! Don’t you just love this pattern and the way it looks. I couldn’t resist drawing it in EQ8 so I had my own rendition – it may not be exact but it really helped me visualize it!

For those of you who are new to the blog, here is a picture of Sherry’s quilt. I like keeping it as a reminder of where we are going. If you haven’t purchased the pattern and started its not too late. Here’s my affiliate link to her pattern (no extra cost to you). Now on to my hints for the month.

CUTTING:
The cutting went pretty fast.  Now I admit, I am using my die cutter – a Sizzix one for this project.  The Sizzix lives in Maine and that’s where I work on this project.  Let me tell you, you spend a little extra time in the cutting and figuring it all out BUT there is no trimming, no squaring up so it is really fast.

CHAIN PIECING:
The picture above shows the first seams on all the pieces.  I did my sewing this way to keep focused – my time was limited and so I didn’t iron until all these pieces were sewn. Watch the location of the triangles for the mediums (grey in mine). You don’t have to want to un-sew and re-piece. I keep the pattern nearby and check a few times when sewing these kinds of triangles.

Here’s the next set of seams.  I sewed all these at the same time too.  It went really fast this way.

And then I did these which was very easy and I thought I was done.  I flipped over the directions (my printer prints two sides) and yikes we were putting the big block together.  Well, truth be told I am getting ready for Rising Star Quilters Quilt Show this weekend and I was on a deadline to get this done.  SO, I made only one of the blocks but it was easy!!

The other blocks I made were a scant small.  Remember, you can ease in a little  difference with the fullness on the bottom of the machine near the feed dogs.  Mostly likely I will use a higher loft batting to help with this, too.

Next month’s installment will be published on November 6th. Please free to ask questions about this if you have any! I have my first quilt for Island Batik’s catalog due on November 8 (my son’s birthday), so I hope not to be working last minute on the Barn BOM next month. I’ll let you know how it is going as the month moves on.

Beautiful block, Kathleen! I’m excited to hear all about the quilt show coming up. Do you have some quilts entered?

The block is working out mostly the way that I would like. I do have 3 quilts entered and am doing fast labels tonight! And pricing boutique items soon with a little dinner in between. I’ll try to write up something about it.
