Sew Let’s QAL – Block 12

We have arrived at the penultimate block in our series. It is hard to believe that it is the second to last block in a group that we began making in February. Our designer this week is Sandy from Sandy Star Designs and her block is easy to piece and fun to appliqué! You can see her block and get the pattern here.

I was working in a lot of green and purple for my Island Batik Challenge, so it seems fitting that it reappeared in this block. Actually, choosing fabrics may have been the hard part on this block. This is a pretty easy block, not too many hints for you but the ones I have follow:

Hint 1: Follow the Directions.
This works like a charm but be sure to mark on the TOP LEFT and BOTTOM RIGHT sides. I was tempted to do top and bottom, but didn’t. I didn’t use extra tools and it worked perfectly.

Hint 2: Use a Stabilizer
To avoid puckering with fusible appliqué, use a stabilizer underneath. I often use a Sulky Totally Stable Iron On Tear Away*.

Hint 3: Needles matter.
Use a nonstick needle* to avoid a needle getting sticky from fusible.

Enjoy this block and the 2 weeks in between. I’ll be finishing block #13 and coming up with a small project (or more) for you. Wish me luck, my brain is still working on it

Our hosts below have great hints – check them out.

Hi Kathleen! I love your block and your rotary cutter looks very realistic. I would almost pick it up by accident. ~smile~ Roseanne

One of the other designers confessed to that happening! It is a fun one and Sandy did a great job designing it.

Your fabrics look like a lovely impressionist painting! I’ve never tried a nonstick needle but it seems like it would be perfect for applique.

Rumor has it those needles are the bomb if you are doing a lot of fusible applique! Thanks for the great pattern and the compliment!
